Who We Are
Puhos Loves People 2021 is an outdoor cultural festival for the whole family. The event takes place on Saturday 2nd of October 2021 from 2 pm to 12 pm at Puhos shopping centre, located in Itäkeskus area of Helsinki, Finland. The Puhos mall is a spontaneously developed meeting place and a vibrant entrepreneur hub with cafes, restaurant and shops gathering people from diverse backgrounds. Puhos Loves People brings together music and other cultural programme designed together by the communities from Puhos and other parts of Eastern Helsinki. The event is free of charge and alcohol free. The festival has been organised since 2017
COVID-19
We follow the instructions of the authorities to protect the festival participants health. To make the event safe for all please wear a face mask during the festival. The event area is open, so keep your distance to fellow participants. If you think you have any symptoms of COVID-19 infection or you have been in contact with someone diagnosed with the virus, stay at home.
Hand sanitizers are available at the festival Info booth near the music stage. If you take part in art workshops sanitizers are also accessible there. In case you forget to bring your own face mask please ask one from the festival Info booth.

Sule Abdalla is a rising young musician singing in Somali-language. In addition to his career as a musician, he has worked as a sound engineer for several Somali-language artists, such as Gulled Simba.

Mad Ice is a dynamic and self-taught singer-songwriter whose music combines elements of pop, soul and african melodies. He is known from his energetic performances and soulful voice. Mad Ice has published several albums and built international career. He started his career in 1998 and rose to fame with his debut studio album in early 2000s which topped the charts on radio stations in East Africa.

King Awale is a rising, Somali-singing artist who is a respected role model among young people. His love songs combines elements of afrobeat and reggae.

Dashing Waves is a Helsinki based rhythm music band whose music combines elements from jazz, reggae, funk, rock and electronic music. The band was founded in 1997 and the core of the band’s music was initially reggae rhythms and the perspective of multiculturalism. Soloist Cheka Kalupala writes lyrics in Lingala, French and English, and the themes of the songs are social and urban.
For a long period of time Chekan, backing vocalist Susanna Hakulinen and three sibling pairs, guitarist and drummer Janec and Joakim Bachmann, keyboardist and backing vocalist Helmi and Tuuli Saksala, and guitarist and bassist Shigeki and Yoshiki Tamura formed the core of the band. Currently, the keyboardist is Kim Rantala. The line-up is complemented by Babel’s Horns, Erno Haukkala and Eero Savela, and percussionist Aki Lahtinen.
The band’s interesting line-up combines family relationships and roots in Käpylä, Congo and Japan. The acclaimed debut album Rockers International was released in 2003. New music is expected in the fall of 2021.

Nisa, who is known from the D.r.e.a.m.g.i.r.l.s collective, is an r’n’b artist whose international sound takes us back to r´n´b´s golden age. The artist, who previously made songs in English, is now releasing a Finnish r’n’b sound to strengthen the Finnish r’n’b field.

LNL or “Liian Nopeet Liikkeet [Too Fast Movenents] ” is an Espoo based collective that combines different sounds from drill to R&B. The ensemble includes “Tokoss”, who is known for his versatile rap style, “Smokey” with a deft rap style and the oven-fresh duo “Kultanen-keskitie [Golden middle way]”. According to the manager, a big surprise is coming.

Tufaax Darajo is an energetic singer and songwriter whose music combines elements of pop, jazz and rhythm and blues. Her Somali language songs have gained recognition and a solid audience from Eastern Africa to Helsinki.

DJ Hem is a Helsinki based dj, poet and vinyl record collector who plays Soviet and especially Central Asian grooves and other delights on the rare vinyls. He invites the festival guests on a musical journey with an easterly commuter train from India to Turkey, from Central Asia to Finland and from Middle East and North Africa to South Eastern Europe.

Dj Nice handles many music genres but is surely at his best when playing urban music such as Hip-Hop / R&B / Trap / Afrobeat / Dancehall. Nice has span records in most of the biggest clubs in the Helsinki Metropolitan area and also abroad in countries including Belgium, Germany, France and Sweden. Dj Nice also has warmed up for big stars such as Jason Derulo, Lloyd Banks, Gyptian, Capleton, Diamond Platnumz, Bracket, Patoranking, Stonebwoy etc.
Book Making Workshop & Shopping Mall Investigations: 3:30-5:30 pm
Throughout the history masks have been used as a medium to change one´s identity to another. For example with animal masks people have connected themselves to forces of nature and embraced the identity of another creature. Masks have also been used as a tool for social criticism and as a medium to increase the power of their wearer. Welcome to make your own mask! The workshop is open to all ages, free of charge and materials are provided. The mask workshop is facilitated by artist Abida Jahan Shuma, who guides and assists in the making of masks with techniques used in Bengali festive culture.

Is there a map to guide a way inside another person? Does one even know the world within themself? Are there common signs which would help us to read one another? Language sometimes feels so flawed, it only opens one level of another person. Much of the communication is microcommunication, which can even go unnoticed by the communicators themselves. The unknown consciousness within us guides our behavior. What is the zone of unknown consciousness like?
The unknown zone – Performance by Art group Kylkiäinen (Katriina Sjöblom / Kati Juurikka / Kreetta Juurikivi-AIJawadi) and artist Sari Hiltunen.

Puhos Loves People festival´s film screening presents compilation of one feature length and two short movies dealing with social situation in Kurdistan and Iran in recent years. The films depicts how politics, war and religion affects everyday life of people in the region. Subtitles of the films are in english. The screening is organised by documentarist and journalist Rasoul Khorram.
To ensure safe screening experience for all please wear a face mask during the screening. Doors for screening open at 9:50 pm and you can participate the screening without registering. 10:05-10:15 pm Microphone ( 9 min, director: Kareemok Ghafour). A child enters a mosque to urinate, but he is lost from his mother. The mother wants to go into the mosque to find her child, but she is not allowed.
10:15-10:35 pm Pale Mirrors (16 min, director Salm Salvati). Shawbo is a woman who has only 24 hours to get pregnant. This might be her last opportunity to get a child, but her seemingly uncertain future has completely confused her. For this reason she needs to go to city prison.
10:40-12:05 pm Mandoo (1t 25 min, director: Ebrahim Saeedi). In 1979, the political upheavals following the Iranian Islamic revolution drove many Iranian Kurds to take refuge in Iraq, where they were placed in camps under appalling living conditions. In 2004, Sheelan – a young doctor of Kurdish origin who had managed to flee to Sweden with her parents – takes advantage of the fall of Saddam Hussein to return to Iraq; she hopes to find her uncle who she hasn’t heard from in over twenty years. Having suffered a stroke, he has lost his ability to speak. His loving son wishes to take him back to his native land, so that he can live out the rest of his days in peace. Unable to convince her uncle and cousin to leave with her for Sweden, Sheelan accompanies them on a long and stormy journey to Iran.
Rasoul Khorram is a photographer, reporter and documentary filmmaker whose artistic work aims to create a wider dialogue and to improve understanding between cultures. Khorram has been active in the Finnish cultural scene since 2013.
